Spotlight on Denis Lincoln

This week the spotlight is on Denis Lincoln, Head Porter at the UCL Institute of Ophthalmology.

What is your role and what does it involve?

My role is Head Porter at the UCL Institute of Ophthalmology. I work with a team of porters to provide a number of services every day. With my team I manage deliveries, meeting room set up, the main reception, event support and security. I work closely with external contractors and organize the shifts for my team. Our porters work together with our academic staff to ensure they have what they need.   

How long have you been at UCL and what was your previous role?

I have been at UCL for 19 years. Before being Head Porter, I was a porter here at the UCL Institute of Ophthalmology. Before UCL I used to be a long distance lorry driver.

What working achievement or initiative are you most proud of?

Receiving the Provost's Award for Excellence in 2015.

Tell us about a project you are working on now which is top of you to-do list?

The restructuring and reorganising of our Goods Inwards area.

What is your favourite album, film and novel?

Favourite album - Led Zeppelin, Led Zeppelin volume 2
Favourite film - Bruce Lee Enter the Dragon
Favourite novel - To Kill a Mockingbird, Harper Lee

What is your favourite joke (pre-watershed)?

A horse walks into a bar. The bartender says, "Hey."
The horse says, "You read my mind, buddy."

Who would be your dream dinner guests?

Marilyn Monroe to hear her true life story, Keith Moon to hear about his escapades, and Winston Churchill, to hear the untold truths about the Second World War.

What advice would you give your younger self?

To have no regrets.

What would it surprise people to know about you?

I qualified for a brown belt in karate.

What is your favourite place?

Canada - Niagara Falls.
