Spotlight on Jenny Waters

2 June 2011

This week the spotlight is on Jenny Waters, Manager of A Fine Cut Hair Salon in UCLU.

Jenny Waters

What is your role and what does it involve?

I offer hair styling plus colouring. Mainly students visit during term time, but in the holidays and at exam time staff are more able to come in.

I still have ex-students returning: one is now a foreign office employee who's been based in Afghanistan. We see students becoming different people as they pass through their years of training. It's a really nice bonus to see how they progress.

How long have you been at UCL and what was your previous role?

Twelve years. Before for six and a half years I was a senior stylist in a Chelsea hairdressers. Nice clients, but each Saturday morning I knew who would be queing up and waiting for the same hair styles that they'd had for the last 20 years. The work didn't make you feel like jumping out of bed! But here even the staff are willing to change their hair styles and colour. - it keeps us on our toes.

What working achievement or initiative are you most proud of?

A member of staff who left to train as a teacher said she wanted a more youthful look so I introduced her to highlights and she's still so excited by them. She's like a child in a candy store, asking each visit, "What should I have now?" It's just great to see her excitement each time.

What is your life like outside UCL?

I find it relaxing to help make charity raffle prizes - artistically decorated baskets of fruit or toiletries.

My husband and I are certified divers and also enjoy snorkelling so we take a couple of holidays a year. We last visited Australia and Tenerife.
