PG Symposium

11 March 2016

On 8 March we held our annual postgraduate research symposium, giving our PGR students a chance to showcase their work, catch up with their peers from around the faculty and be in with a chance of winning some money! There were two competitions, a poster competition ran in the North Cloisters and was awash with examples of highly thought-provoking work, while over in the Pavilion we saw a series of three minute thesis presentations, where pre and post upgrade students tried to summarise their aims and achievements using no more than one slide and in no more than three minutes.

Presentations were judged by Professors David Shanks and Glyn Lewis and Faculty Tutor, Dr Julie Evans.

We'd like to say an enormous thank you to our specially invited guest judge for this year's event, Dr Helen Jamison, Head of Media Relations at the Wellcome Trust. She says: "As Head of Media at the Wellcome Trust, I'm responsible for ensuring that we communicate effectively with the media on key issues relating to our mission to improve global health. That might mean helping the researchers we fund tell to their stories or writing news articles to inform debate on major developments such as the Ebola outbreak. Given how much information about science the public and policymakers get from the media, it's essential that researchers are able to communicate their ideas to a wide audience from an early stage - it's a crucial skill that will prove invaluable throughout a research career."

Helen joined other poster judges from across the faculty who were led by Professor Alan Thompson, Faculty Dean and Dr Julie Evans.

The calibre of the work this year was very high, but our judges finally settled on winners and highly commended entries for both competitions and for both pre and post upgrade levels.
