UCL researcher awarded prestigious Lister Institute Research Prize

Dr Josef Kittler, MRC Senior Fellow at the department of Neuroscience, Physiology and Pharmacology, has been awarded the Lister Institute Research Prize, one of only three recipients this year.
The Lister Institute, founded in 1891, supports a wide variety of biomedical and related research, and awards the Lister Institute Research Prize to young scientists in order for them to develop their potential as independent research scientists.
Dr. Josef Kittler will receive £200,000 to be spent within a five year period. Josef said, "I am honoured to have received the Lister Institute Research Prize. This generous funding from the Lister Institute will help us to study the mechanisms that regulate synaptic connections in the brain and in particular how altered mitochondrial function and compromised energy provision at synapses contributes to disrupted information processing and unhealthy or dying neurons in neurological diseases."
Professor Trevor Smart, Head of Department of Neuroscience, Physiology and Pharmacology, said, "I am delighted at Josef's success at being awarded a Lister Research Prize. He is an outstanding colleague in who we have great expectations."
