Launch of UCL Laws Centre for Criminal Law

A new Centre for Criminal Law has been established in the Faculty of Laws at UCL, with the aim of co-ordinating and promoting research, teaching, and knowledge transfer in criminal law and related subjects.

Journalists are welcome to attend the launch event at UCL in 27 October, which will include a keynote address by Professor Andrew Ashworth, Vinerian Professor of English Law at the University of Oxford, on the subject of risk and risk management in criminal justice.

Professor Ian Dennis, Director of the Centre for Criminal Law, says: "While criminal law has always been a subject of major academic and practical importance, its profile has been heightened considerably in recent years by the growth in terrorism, organised crime and money-laundering, frequently across national boundaries. The impact of the European Convention on Human Rights and the development of international criminal law and its associated tribunal jurisdiction are further indicators of the increasing globalisation of the subject.

"As London's global university UCL is the ideal location for the Centre. The work of the Centre will link directly with the UCL Grand Challenge theme of security, and we envisage its activities having an important interdisciplinary dimension."
