New postgraduate courses at UCL Institute of the Americas

The UCL Institute of the Americas has recently been established to promote, coordinate and provide a focus for research and postgraduate teaching on the Americas.

Students will be able to take advantage of tuition by world-leading scholars in an academic environment designed to be at the cutting edge of research.

The Institute comprises academic expertise across a wide range of fields in the humanities and social sciences. Interdisciplinary debate is encouraged and small class sizes and facilities will enable students to fulfil their potential.

There are five Masters degrees being offered:

  • Caribbean and Latin American Studies MA

This MA offers students the opportunity to develop an understanding of the diverse societies of both the South American continent and the Caribbean from a multidisciplinary and comparative perspective.

  • Globalisation and Latin American Development MSc

This MSc examines the theoretical issues raised by globalisation and studies the degree to which contemporary indices of globalisation are continuous with earlier forms of Latin America's global incorporation, and the ways in which the region's development is bound up with global processes.

  • Latin American Politics MSc

The Latin American Politics MSc provides students with an opportunity to engage with a range of theoretical approaches, and options include the fields of international politics, political sociology and human rights.

  • Latin American Studies MA

Students will develop analytical and critical perspectives in multidisciplinary aspects of Latin American anthropology, cultural studies and literature, economics, geography and environmental issues, history, politics and international relations, depending on their chosen areas of specialisation.

  • United States Studies: History and Politics MA

This multidisciplinary MA provides a broad range of specialist modules in the humanities and social sciences, bringing together the academic expertise of staff of the Institute of the Americas with United States along with specialists from other universities.

The Institute also provides programmes of study for MPhil and PhD degrees in the history, politics and sociology of Latin America, the US, Canada and the Caribbean, according to the research specialisms of the academic staff. Associate Fellows of the Institute also supervise students for research degrees.

The Institute of the Americas is pleased to be offering 15 bursaries. 10 will be available for UK/EU students, 5 will be available for overseas students of which 2 are earmarked for students from Latin America and the Caribbean.
