Students to benefit from Lloyds Scholars programme

30 May 2012

UCL has signed up to the Lloyds Scholars programme, a scholarship scheme that will provide financial support for talented students from below average income families.

UCLQuad Under the terms of the programme, support will be provided for 15 students kicking off in September 2012.

In addition to financial support, the Lloyd Scholars programme will offer students access to a dedicated mentor from Lloyds Banking Group's senior management team, paid internships with the Group in the summer and a chance to boost employability through lectures, workshops and events run by Lloyds Banking Group.

First year students can apply to join the programme for this coming year once they have accepted the offer of a place, and 15 will then be chosen through a rigorous selection process that will assess academic potential and financial need.

Students must come from a household with an income below £25,000, secure a place at UCL and undergo a Lloyds Banking Group assessment before being accepted onto the programme. The programme currently has 45 Scholars, 15 each from the Universities of Bristol, Sheffield and Edinburgh.

Students will receive an annual sum ranging from £1000 upwards dependent on a range of factors, as well as opportunities to learn how an organisation like Lloyds works.

UCL Provost Malcolm Grant said: "The Lloyds Scholars programme will provide 15 talented students with a range of opportunities and financial assistance, which will enable them to fulfil their potential. In addition, the programme asks students to make a contribution to their community through volunteering, an element that we are particularly keen on, given the support and encouragement UCL offers students to volunteer, with some 1,500 UCL students currently engaged on our volunteering programmes."

António Horta-Osório, chief executive of Lloyds Banking Group, said: "Through our branches and our brands we have the potential to touch nearly every household and community in the UK. Giving back to those communities is fundamental to what we stand for as a group and is the cornerstone of our Community Investment Programme. Unlocking the potential of young people who otherwise may not have had the opportunity to attend university provides a strong foundation from which to build a powerful and lasting community legacy."
