Bright Club event at the Bloomsbury Theatre

15 May 2012

Bright Club: The UK event is coming to the Bloomsbury Theatre on 18 May.

Bright Club Four of the hottest talents from outside London will take on four UCL performers to find out which city does funny best. This special gig is to celebrate the Bright Clubs emerging all over the UK.

Since the UCL Public Engagement Unit set up Bright Club three years ago, there have been 40 events, the unit have trained over 200 staff and students, and spin-off events have been held in 12 cities. It also won the UCL Social Enterprise of the Year Award, 2011.

Bright Club's first appearance was in May 2009 on the theme of Lust, since then topics have included: London, Time, Film, Crime and Sea. Podcasts are available once a week, and can be downloaded via iTunes or an RSS feed.

The fundamental aim of Bright Club is public engagement. Steve Cross, head of Public Engagement at UCL and a founder of Bright Club explained: "Bright Club is unique. There are other places you can hear about academic research in a funny way, but none of them feature the actual researchers, often on stage for the first time in their lives!

"Bright Club has been featured in the New York Times, the BBC website and was recently on Radio 4. But more importantly, Bright Club is attracting an audience who don't work or study at universities, to interact, and helping staff to make public engagement part of the way they work."

Bright Club is a collaboration between UCL, comedy promoters One Green Firework and music promoters Duel in the Deep. Financial support has been offered from the Science and Technology Facilities Council and the Wellcome Trust.

Tickets for Bright Club: The UK event are £8 and can be purchased at the link below.
