Gower Place GP practice in discussions with ULU

1 October 2013

UCL has been looking to relocate the Gower Place GP practice from its current site in order to use the space for new student and staff facilities in the Faculty of Maths and Physical Sciences.

Encouragingly, the practice is now in discussions with the University of London about occupying space in the University of London Union (ULU) building on Malet Place.

If the practice moves to ULU, as well as retaining all its existing services for the UCL community, it will offer services to all students resident in WC1 - regardless of their college within the University of London. It will also be open to anyone in need of emergency care.

The move is likely to take place during the 2014/15 academic year. UCL is committed to ensuring that student and staff health care provision is not jeopardised in any way as a consequence of the move, and will extend the Gower Place lease that expires in 2014 to ensure a smooth transition if needed.

The Gower Place premises are required for the provision of a centre for postgraduate research students in the UCL Faculty of Maths and Physical Sciences. This will provide much needed working space for a growing student population and enable the co-location of groups of students who will benefit from the opportunity to interact with their peers.

The relocation of the practice was initially proposed in UCL's Bloomsbury Masterplan, which sets out a framework to develop and improve our estate over the next 10 to 15 years. It was prepared over the 2010-2011 session with a thorough review and analysis of the estate, and wide consultation with UCL staff and student communities.

It is inevitable that usage of different parts of the campus will change as we seek to adapt it to changing needs. We are confident the Masterplan will work for the benefit of all our students and staff and make a real improvement to our estate.
