UCL Mullard Space Science lab to train ESA staff

5 October 2012

UCL's Mullard Space Science Laboratory (MSSL) has won a major 3-5 year contract to provide project management training to the next generation of project managers at the European Space Agency (ESA).

MSSL's Technology Management Group will deliver the training at a venue close to ESA's European Space Research and Technology Centre (ESTEC) in the Netherlands, with a team consisting of Prof Alan Smith, Dr Michael Emes (Programme Manager), Matthew Whyndham and Simon Jackson.

Dr Emes said: "Winning this contract is a testimony to the quality of the training we offer. What started as a single executive education course in project management in 1996 has developed into a thriving MSc programme and a broad and growing portfolio of professional training courses delivered around the world (now on five continents).

"We know that ESA will be a demanding customer that will push us to continue to improve our standards; we'll use experience acquired during this contract to develop new courses for our own project managers and systems engineers so that they benefit from the same quality of training as we provide for ESA."

Training will be aimed at ESA staff who are directly involved in the management of medium to large (€50M+) ESA projects, or who will be strong candidates for such roles in the near future.
