The Council will help shape the strategic direction and priorities for Research England as part of UK Research and Innovation. It is chaired by David Sweeney, former Director of Research, Education and Knowledge Exchange at HEFCE and sits alongside the other seven Research Councils and InnovateUK.

Research England was established in 2017, in order to provide oversight of funding and support for innovation and knowledge exchange in English universities.

Professor Reid said: "I am honoured to be appointed to the Council and I look forward to working with the other members in creating and setting the direction in order to support UK Research and Innovation."

Professor Reid is currently serving as Specialist Advisor to the House of Lords inquiry into Life Sciences and Industrial Strategy, and leading a review of Government-funded research and innovation for the Welsh Government. He has recently advised the House of Lords Science and Technology Committee during their recent inquiries into Brexit and UK Science.
