About UCL

UCL has maintained fourth place - its highest ever position - in the annual QS World University Rankings, published today.

The university is second among UK universities, placing it second behind the University of Cambridge, and ahead of the University of Oxford and Imperial College London.

Welcoming the news, Professor Malcolm Grant, UCL President and Provost, said: "We do not, of course, claim that the methodology is rigorous, but this result nonetheless captures very accurately the enormous strength of this great institution." 

UCL context

• In the 2008 Research Assessment Exercise (RAE) UCL was rated the best research university in London, and third in the UK overall, for the number of its submissions which were considered of 'world-leading quality'.
• UCL's 11 associated teaching hospitals - which include the Great Ormond Street Hospital for Children, the Royal Free Hospital and Moorfields Eye Hospital - provide Londoners with first-rate healthcare as well as contribute to major advances in medical research.
• UCL Partners is the university's partnership with four of London's biggest and best known hospitals and research centres: Great Ormond Street Hospital for Children NHS Trust; Moorfields Eye Hospital NHS Foundation Trust; the Royal Free Hampstead NHS Trust; and UCL Hospitals NHS Foundation Trust. It has brought together over 3,500 scientists, senior researchers and consultants who will be able to produce more world-class research and deliver the benefits more rapidly to patients in London and around the world.
• Our academic community includes 36 fellows of the Royal Society, 26 Fellows of the British Academy, 10 Fellows of the Royal Academy of Engineering and 78 Fellows of the Academy of Medical Sciences.
• Nobel Prizes have been awarded to 21 former academics and graduates.  The most recent addition in October 2009 was Professor Charles Kao who was awarded a Nobel prize for Physics. Professor Kao undertook his PhD at UCL under the supervision of Professor Harold Barlow.
• More than a third of the 22,000-strong student community is engaged in graduate studies, with almost half of these graduate students pursuing research degrees.
• Students from more than 140 countries outside the UK study at UCL, making up almost a third of the student body.

• An ever-expanding worldwide network of more than 120,000 UCL alumni, helps to maintain the university's international reputation for access, innovation and excellence.
