Green UCL have launched their latest annual report

The Green UCL project primarily works closely with UCL departments, academics and the student union to improve the sustainability and environmental impact of UCL in terms of their curriculum, energy and transport. The annual report demonstrates the strategic progress in meeting their objectives of the program over the year period.

The five core aims of the strategic plan are:

• to create a sustainable campus
• to enable, empower and support the UCL community to tackle their sustainability impacts
• to provide the education, advancement dissemination and application of sustainable development
• to maximise the impact of UCL's environmental sustainability activities at local, regional, national and international through collaboration, partnership and communications
• to become a leader across the HE sector in terms of environmental sustainability.

Director of sustainability at UCL Richard Jackson expressed his views on the progress Green UCL is making: "This is an exciting time for sustainability at UCL. During the last year, environmental best practice has continued to be embedded across our estate, operations and curriculum.

"Our Annual Report is a chance to showcase some of this best practice. We know we've still got a way to go, but as you can see from the examples provided, UCL is driving forward environmental improvements, participation and sustainability innovation."

Among other things, the annual report shows how Green UCL have effectively carried out the sustainable refurbishment of 31 Tavistock Square. High energy efficient lighting with sensory controls were used throughout the building to ensure low energy levels.

Although the building has a high level of heritage being built within the 18th century the refurbishment process successfully managed to maintain and respect that image of the building.
