David Willetts: our privately funded university revolution

Universities Minister, David Willetts, writes: "When UCL opened in 1828 it offered a secular alternative to the Oxbridge duopoly, as well as a curriculum with new and practical subjects like modern languages, economics and engineering. It was variously dismissed as "that godless institution on Gower Street" and "a mere lecture bazaar". Read: Telegraph
