20 children may have died needlessly at heart unit

Leeds General Infirmary was told to close the unit on Thursday after the NHS's most senior doctor became increasingly alarmed at care of children with cardiac conditions. Sir Roger Boyle (UCL Institute of Cardiovascular Science), head of a central unit which analyses NHS cardiac mortality data said: "The data we saw on Wednesday was preliminary but we saw a trajectory for Leeds which is very different from the other hospitals - it was at least twice the national average."
