IMPORTANT: Updating your address and the Banks Hub

13 September 2017

Welcome to London! We’re excited to meet you next week at ISOP!

It is important that you update your term-time address to your UK address before you attend your in-person enrolment appointment. If you are staying in a UCL Hall of Residence, please ensure that your room number is included in your address. Your ‘home address’ should remain as your permanent overseas address.

Watch the video below for a step-by-step guide on how to update your address!

After you have updated your address and enrolled, you will be able to visit the Banks Hub. This will be located in the Pop Up Learning Hub in the South Quad (opposite the Print Room Cafe) from Wednesday 20 September – Friday 22 September and Monday 25 September – Tuesday 26 September. There will be representatives from some major UK banks present who can advise you and help get the process of opening a bank account started.

You are advised to research these banks before coming to the Banks Hub so that you have an idea of which bank you would like to open an account with. You will find information about each specific bank in the ‘Banks’ section (pages 7-10) of our International Students’ Guide which will be given out at enrolment, and can be found online on the International Student Support website. You will also be give a handout at the Banks Hub which will include more information about what each bank can offer.

IMPORTANT - before opening a bank account, make sure you have:

  1. Updated your term-time address to your UK address on portico
  2. Collected your BRP (if necessary)
  3. Enrolled with UCL

What will you need to bring with you?

Banks may need slightly different documents in order to open an account. We advise you to take the following documents with you:

  • Both originals and photocopies of your passport (or national ID card) and BRP
  • A Statement of Student Status and UCL Student ID, which you will obtain during enrolment – please note that you must have enrolled before you can open a bank account
  • Your BRP, which you will obtain prior to enrolment if you are a non EU student

Please note that not all banks work with students who are in the UK for a short period of time. Some may consider your application, but please ask the bank directly for further information.

You can also check the ‘Banks’ section of the International Student Support website for further information on how to open a bank account.

Opening a bank account can seem a little confusing at first, but don’t worry! We’re here to help and with a little preparation beforehand, the process should be straightforward.
