19 May, 2014 - Generating social trust in the 21st century

Time: -

European countries, the EU & the UN focus on measures of wellbeing rather than GDP as an indicator for the health of societies. While many wellbeing measures attempt to quantify happiness, little attention is paid to the mechanisms by which trust in social institutions is engendered. Yet, a high level of social trust is central to successful, healthy & equal societies. Building social trust presents enormous challenges today for European political leaders. How is social trust & citizen trust generated? What does the future for maintaining social trust look like in the 21st century? This two-day forum (organised by UCL Science, Medicine & Society Network & UCL European Institute) seeks to explore the effects of trust-building research on new efforts to address social distrust. Exploring the areas of welfare, healthcare and inequity, it asks if social trust is a better measure of social wellbeing than emerging indicators on individual and national happiness. © Wellcome Images
