30 May, 2012 - Centre for Ageing and Mental Health Sciences Seminar: Memantine for agitation in Alzheimer's disease the MAGD trial

Time: 15:30:00 - 17:30:00

Organised by UCL Neuroscience

Agitation is a major problem in patients with dementia. Many of the current pharmcological treatments are ineffective or have high morbidity - e.g. CSM 2004 atypical antipsychotics. A recent Cochrane review and 2 industry RCTs have indicated possible benefit for Memantine in agitation but none have looked at under 12 weeks. NICE have suggested behavioural benefit of Memantine need further trials. The study aimed to evaluate whether Memantine can benefit agitation over 3 months which would have significant advantages for morbidity, placement, quality of care and cost if this effect can be pragmatically shown.

18 July, 2012 - Olympian minds: can we train our brain for success in sports and other fields?

Time: 18:30:00 - 21:00:00

It has long been understood that our brains have an element of plasticity and are able to change as a result of inputs from the environment. Professor Heidi Johansen-Berg (University of Oxford Centre for Functional MRI of the Brain) will be in dialogue with Professor Semir Zeki (UCL Neuroesthetics) and other academics from UCL to discuss brain plasticity, its importance and its limitations.
