Rhea Brent
PhD Student

Rhea studied Chemistry at UMIST, and graduated with an MChem with Industrial Experience in 2004. She then went to work at AstraZeneca for 2 years, during which time she worked on the early development of new drug molecules. Her main interests were in the solid-state properties of the molecules, overcoming issues of crystallisation and polymorphism. In May 2006, she won a prize for the best talk at an "RSC Emerging Young Professionals" conference, discussing her research in the "Solubility differences between Amorphous and Crystalline Pharmaceuticals.

A particular interest of my study is to gain information about the processes that contribute to variations in crystal morphology. In addition to this, manipulating the role of structure-directing agents to obtain particular phase and habit is desirable. It is hoped that by understanding these properties in a small number of zeolite systems, parallels with other systems can be identified. The information obtained could be applied to the growth of new porous materials, in which habit and size can be tailored to give crystals with favourable industrial properties.
