"There's more to life than molecules: come to the Grant Museum to see giant land snails, the gorilla that hugged H.G. Wells, and more. Biology as it was, and, with luck, soon will be again!"

Prof Steve Jones, Friend of the Grant Museum

Friends of The Grant Museum

The Friends of the Grant Museum help ensure the collection's continued success and survival in many ways. The Friends programme helps fund ongoing projects including conservation, documentation and the renovation of displays. It also affords the opportunity to get involved with projects at a hands-on level. In addition, funds raised through the Friends Programme will enable new and exciting projects to be initiated, such as those geared towards widening participation and improving access to the collection for all.

Benefits of becoming a Friend

On becoming a friend you will receive the following benefits:

- Priority access to the collection and opportunity to view specimens not normally on display - Attendance of annual Robert Grant Lecture and other relevant events - Guided tours and demonstrations of ongoing work - Special activity days for Friends and their families - Receive Friends newsletter with exciting goings on at the Grant Museum and feature articles - Annual outing to places of historic and scientific interest - The opportunity to adopt a specimen - Adoption certificate for adopted specimen

Adopt an Animal

Our most popular friends benefit is the opportunity to adopt a favourite specimen from our extensive collections. Those who adopt a specimen can attend special 'care days' and will receive an adoption certificate informing them about their adopted creature. Through the adoption of a specimen adopting 'parents' gain first hand insight into the care of natural history collections, including areas such as specimen conservation and documentation, in addition to learning about the animal itself.

Volunteering at the Grant Museum

Whether you're interested in being a biologist, an archaeologist, a palaeontologist, a museum professional or an educator, volunteering experience at the Grant Museum is a great way to further your interest and help us at the same time.

The museum offers many opportunities for members of the public to get involved in education (see our Learning page for more details of what we offer), conservation of the specimens, documentation of the collection and general museum assistance. There are always plenty of things to do, and we can usually tailor your activities to your own abilities.

Update: At present, we only have spaces for Learning volunteers. Please register your interest, by downloading our volunteering application form here and sending it back to us at the following address:

Grant Museum of Zoology University College London Gower Street London WC1E 6BT

- or email your form to zoology.museum@ucl.ac.uk and we will get back to you about how and when you can help us and vice versa.
