UNCOVERING THE HIDDEN LEGACY OF ANCIENT EGYPT: AN AFRICAN CIVILISATION

Date: Tues 1, 8, 15, 22, 29 May & 12, 19, 26 June | Time: 6-8.30pm | Location: Petrie Museum | Price: £100 for 8 weeks Book via Jacinth Martin at CSEP on 0208 686 7865 or email jacinth.martin@csep.org.uk | Age group: Older teens / Adults |

The Petrie Museum of Egyptian Archaeology in partnership with Croydon Supplementary Education Project (CSEP) is pleased to announce the return of this evening short course. Robin Walker, author of seminal When We Ruled, will be teaching this fascinating eight session programme.

Everybody has heard of the Ancient Egyptians, but what do we really know about them?
The Biblical writers painted a picture of Ancient Egyptian life and culture, as did the Ancient Greeks, the Romans, the Orientalists, the Egyptologists, the Africanists and even Hollywood. In our modern age, we have all seen television ‘documentaries’ purporting to reconstruct this or that aspect of Ancient Egyptian life, but often with the Egyptians depicted as Europeans. How has this affected our ability to reconstruct the history of pre-Arab Egyptian culture?
This unique short course of eight weeks explores the history, culture and achievements of this ancient African civilisation. We show that there is ample evidence allowing a detailed reconstruction of this culture drawn from a wide variety of source materials.

THE VALLEY OF GWANGI (1969) ON THE BIG SCREEN

Date: 20 June | Time: 6.30pm | Location: JZ Young Theatre, Anatomy Building, University College London, Gower Street, WC1E 6BT | Price: Free. There is no need to book | Age group: Adults |

In this Ray Harryhausen classic, we see dinosaurs pitted against cowboys as circus-owners attempt to include prehistoric creatures in their Wild West show. Following the discovery of a living miniature horse – which turns out to be a 50 million year old relic – the team ventures into the cursed “Forbidden Valley”? Unsurprisingly, everything doesn’t go to plan. This was special-effects master Harryhausen’s final prehistoric masterpiece; you may recognise very similar scenes recreated in Jurassic Park. And the ending…unbelievable.

Historian of Biology and film-buff Dr Joe Cain (UCL Science and Technology Studies) will introduce the film. Part of Silly Season at the Grant Museum. The event is followed by a free drinks reception in a private view of the Museum. This event is free and there is no need to book.
