Model Translations Exhibition

For this collaborative exhibition between the UCL Mellon Programme and UCL Museums & Collections, five former Mellon Fellows chose objects that relate both to their specific research interests and to the broad subject of the ‘model’. The UCL collections represented here include art, anthropology, archaeology, engineering, pathology and zoology. The models belong to an era of the physical rather than the digital, when engagement with three-dimensional objects played a prominent role in teaching at UCL. They record encounters and explorations – between scholars and the natural and made environment, across space and time – encapsulating human imagination and creativity in material form, while in some cases materialising world views that may be problematic and difficult to reconcile today.
