The Geomatic Engineering Collection

Piece from the Geomatic Engineering Collection

This collection contains various large photogrammetric and plotting machines. There is equipment developed by Professor E.H. Thompson, a pioneer in geodesy and angular triangulation who came to UCL in 1951 (and remained until his death in 1976). This includes one of only two known surviving examples of an Astro-clinometer - this solved the navigational problems confronted by the Long Range Desert Group in North Africa during WW2. There is also Thompson’s pinhole plotter and equipment developed by himself and his colleagues for the government during and after World War II. They also house the Photogrammetric Society of Great Britain’s collection of all E.H. Thompson's papers, blueprints, plans etc. and the Zeiss Rega Total Station that determines distances and angles.
