Display and exhibition
The use of 3D digital models in display and exhibition has been quite rare, though lately it is gradually increasing.
3D models for museum displays and exhibitions are favoured because:
- they can appeal to aesthetic perceptions
- they can engage younger audiences
- they require less care and maintenance than the real museum objects in terms of demanding specific environmental conditions
- they can be used creatively to complement object-based learning or to show aspects of objects that cannot be emphasised otherwise
- they have huge potential for planning displays and visualising temporary or touring exhibitions
Yet, such technology needs to be carefully considered in terms of:
- cost
- benefits to visitors
- effectiveness for the museum staff
