Aims and objectives

The project aims to bring together a range of experts from the higher education and the museum and heritage sectors with diverse research interests. It will explore the uses and advantages of using scanning techniques, from reviewing the current range and uses of scanning in museums through to discussing the future implications of this technology, with a stress on innovative and creative applications.

The project will offer a workshop, some practical working groups, a conference and a publication resulting from the above exploring the applications, practicalities and limitations of using 3D modelling techniques in museum work, particularly in the fields of:

  • Display and exhibition
  • Education and interpretation
  • Diagnostic and preventative conservation

The specific objectives of the project are the following:

  • to investigate the potential uses of 3D object scanning in museum work;
  • to provide a platform for institutions with relative experience to disseminate findings and comment on the processes of using these technologies;
  • to create a network of institutions and individuals across the cultural sector interested in 3D object scanning;
  • to undertake scanning work for use in pilot projects;
  • to raise awareness of different scanning technologies and their limitations and practicalities;
  • to disseminate the findings and ideas to the technology and heritage sectors.
