Access information
If you have mobility difficulties please contact us in advance of your visit and we will do our best to help. We may be able to arrange parking for you in the main university quadrangle (off Gower Street, see map). There is a banner over the entrance to the museum, which is located on the first floor of the DMS Watson library. Staff at the security desk just inside the library entrance will be able to direct you to the museum (there are signs) and will give you a free visitor card which will give you access to the museum for the day.
There is lift access to the museum on the first floor, and to the toilet for visitors with disabilities on the third floor. Inside the museum visitors must negotiate two steps to reach the second gallery: a wheelchair lift is available. Occasionally on Saturdays in vacation time, or for evening events, lift access may not be possible; please contact us in advance of your visit to check.
Lighting within the museum is less than ideal, and we offer visitors the loan of torches. Seating is available.
School visits
The Petrie Museum welcomes school group visits on Tuesday and Wednesday mornings between 10am and 12pm. There is no charge for this service. Pupils will normally have exclusive use of the museum. Visits are based on the use of a downloadable Teachers' Pack entitled ‘Egypt in Africa’. Each session begins with an introduction to the collection and ends with a ‘Question and Answer Session’. Pre booking is essential and and this can be arranged by contacting the Visitor Services Officer.
Group visits
Groups are welcome to visit but for space reasons booking is ESSENTIAL. Tuesday and Wednesday mornings are set aside for school groups. To discuss your requirements and make bookings contact us by email or ring us on +44 (0)20 7679 2884. We offer a variety of teaching and learning resources and services.
Research visits
Please note, due to ongoing exhibition work we cannot facilitate research visits until Mid-June 2013. We apologise for any inconvenience.
Individual researchers are welcome outside public opening hours and are encouraged to visit on Mondays, when the museum is closed to the public. For space reasons booking is ESSENTIAL. Email us or ring us on +44 (0)20 7679 2884. It will help us prepare if you can search the online catalogue in advance and tell us the museum numbers of the objects you wish to see (normally up to 10 objects per day). If you wish to conduct analysis on objects please consult our analysis policy and complete an analysis request form. Requests are considered by a committee, and you should allow three months for consideration.
Photography
Photography without flash is allowed, but if you wish to order photographs ask a member of the museum staff when you visit.
