1. Manager, Petrie Museum of Egyptian Archaeology
£31,778 - £38,441 per annum including London weighting

The Petrie Museum of Egyptian Archaeology is one of the greatest collections of Egyptian and Sudanese archaeology in the world, and a Designated collection. It illustrates life in the Nile Valley from prehistory through the time of the pharaohs, the Ptolemaic, Roman and Coptic periods to the Islamic period. It is extensively used for UCL teaching and global research and attracts a wide schools audience.

The Manager will lead the sustainable development of the Petrie Museum, making sure the collection is cared for and actively used in teaching and research within the university and internationally, and promoting it as a source of inspiration for the broader community. It is hoped to move the museum to new accommodation during the coming years. In the lead up to this move, the postholder will play a key part in planning, community consultation and fundraising.

This is a varied and demanding job in an important collection, and the postholder will often need to act as the public face of the museum. Nevertheless the staff team is very small and the Manager will frequently be involved in practical tasks onsite. The post requires a combination of enthusiasm, creativity, academic ability, organizational and practical skills, excellent communication skills, and a commitment to hard work. Experience of successful project and staff management - preferably in the heritage or museum sector – is essential. Applicants must have experience of successful audience development, preferably with African or Arab World communities.

Closing date: Monday 23 November 2009.
