Images from the Regional Planetary Imaging Facility (RPIF) and UCL Micropalaeontology Collection.

The UCL Geology Collections contain some of the most extraordinary images on campus. They also represent some of the most difficult to view entities in the universe. At one extreme are exceptionally rare photographs of planetary bodies, while at the other are stunning images of newly discovered species of microfossil, both of which are exhibited here as complementary pairings.

Although very different subjects, planets and microfossils share a common characteristic: they are invisible to our everyday experience and yet have a huge influence upon it. The incredible advances in imaging technologies over the last 40 or so years have enabled micropalaeontologists and planetary scientists to make discoveries previously unimaginable and to begin to understand these micro- and macro-scaled worlds. This exhibition presents some of the results of this research and in doing so it attempts to extend to the public some of the wonder experienced by the scientists who have created them. By deliberately masking the scale of the images and omitting any descriptive labels, viewers are invited to discover for themselves the formal and aesthetic properties of these largely unseen images, unhindered by external information.

The UCL Geology Collections cover many areas of research, some of which are viewable by the general public, including the Rock Room and the Regional Planetary Imaging Facility (RPIF). For specific opening times and much more information about the collections, please go to the website at www.ucl.ac.uk/museums/geology or contact the collections on geolcoll@ucl.ac.uk
