This resource contains a selection of 100 high-resolution portraits from UCL Art Museum’s collections, including anonymous sitters and famous people, royalty and artists, Old Masters and Slade students. With collections numbering over 10,000 artworks, the question of what and how to select becomes almost impossible to answer – therefore in this case the basis for selection has been highly personal, centering around the themes of moustaches, wigs and odd hats. Most of the faces you will see here are men’s, an accurate reflection of the bias within the collection itself. We were also keen to include many of our anonymous sitters, men and women whose identity is now lost to us. We invite you to download and use the images in this resource, and to imagine the lives behind these faces.
