The function of these pins is not always certain.

Middle Kingdom (about 2025-1700 BC)

(Hair?) pins are not attested in the Old Kingdom (about 2686-2181 BC) , but seem to be common in the Middle Kingdom and later, although the precise function of single pins is often uncertain.

New Kingdom (about 1550-1069 BC)


Roman Period hairpins

In the Roman Period, in Egypt as elsewhere hairpins were a popular item of female headwear: there is therefore a great range of motifs adorning the upper end of pins, including figurative as well as geometric designs.
