Ancient Greek-language sources record Menes as the legendary first king of Egypt: the name appears to derive from the king Meni cited in New Kingdom sources as the first king of Egypt. Some scholars have proposed that Menes might be identical with Narmer or with Aha, but his identification with one of the kings known from contemporary sources is highly uncertain.
