Tomb types: small mastaba

Even small tombs could have a superstructure of mastaba type. Only a few examples have survived. The burial chamber is placed under such a small mastaba (as shown here). The tomb chamber under such small mastabas might be a simple hole in the ground (as here shown), but it also might be a small shaft or even a small shaft with a chamber. Less solid superstructures, such as a loose rubble or earthen mound or a simpler marker, have little chance of surviving.
