Button seals dated by archaeological context
(Wiese 1996: 44)

The earliest button seals are very similar in style to the cylinder seals with figures. The earliest of these cylinders seals are datable to the end of the Fifth Dynasty. From the archaeological context the earliest button seals are datable to the Sixth Dynasty.
