Hawara: Roman Period glass vessel: UC 22197
Glass fragment with a wheel cut decoration. Cutting of glass vessels dates back to the early first millennium in Iraq. The technique of wheel cutting is from then on in the Eastern Mediterranean a regular way of decorating luxury glass objects. The patterns used are often rather simple. In the Hellenistic Period the patterns became more complicated. The technique was especially popular in the late Roman empire, when often many figures were cut into the glass. The technique is still used in the Islamic Period.
