Hawara, Roman Period mummy masks
and foot cases

Gilded mummy masks and upper body covers. Such masks/covers, showing also
the upper part of the body and the hands, are typical for Hawara. It has been
argued that they were influenced by Roman busts (Parlasca
1967: 567). The dating of them remains a research problem. Grimm (Grimm
1974: 44-54) dates them to the first century AD from comparing the hair
style with late Ptolemaic and Roman portraits. The datings are not certain:
some specialists would date some of these finds to the Ptolemaic Period.
