Fustat, the first Islamic capital in Egypt

Fustat was for a long period the capital of Islamic Egypt. Its splendour is described by travellers who visited the city. Al-Muqaddasi (born 944, died end 10th century), mentioned richly decorated houses and the bazaars selling goods coming from lands as far as Spain and China. The Persian writer Nasir-i Khusraw (1004 - 1077) describes the houses as seven to fourteen storeys high, and records that some streets were lit by day and night.
