Dr Jonathan Rae joins the MSSL Space Plasmas Group

21 April 2013

Dr Jonathan Rae has joined the MSSL Space Plasmas Group as a new lecturer in space plasma physics with effect from April 1st 2013.

Jonny joins the group from the University of Alberta in Edmonton, Canada where he worked from 2001-2013 as a Senior Research Associate with Prof. Ian Mann, and as a sessional lecturer.

Jonnys research interests follow three main themes:

  • finding the plasma instability responsible for detonating the substorm,
  • understanding magnetosphere-ionosphere coupling at the Earth and at other planets, and
  • understanding and ultimately predicting the energetic particle dynamics of the Van Allen Radiation Belts, a significant radiation hazard at Earth and at many other planets.

Jonny is a member of the NASA THEMIS Science Team, Co-Investigator on the Canadian Space Agency Next Generation Fluxgate Magnetometer to be flown on the Norwegian ICI-4 sub-orbital rocket, and Co-Investigator on the Canadian Space Agency CARISMA ground magnetometer network.
