Cleanroom Facilities

MSSL have available various classes of cleanrooms. The cleanrooms provide environmentally controlled areas which are typically used for:

  • Assembly, test and integration of spacecraft components, instruments and structures
  • Test & verification of Moments of Inertia (MOI) and centre of gravity of flight hardware
  • Assembly, alignment, test and integration of optical components and structures in our dark cleanroom

The MSSL ISO class 5 cleanroom is based upon the horizontal laminar flow design, with one complete end wall being a bank of HEPA (High Efficiency Particle Air) filters. Typical activities taking place within the cleanroom facility are:

  • Assembly, test and integration of space flight hardware components, instruments and structures
  • Assembly, alignment, test and integration of space flight optical components and structures

MSSL technician assembling flight hardware in ISO 6 cleanroom

The ISO class 6 cleanroom houses the majority of MSSL vacuum test chambers and calibration facilities. These facilities are:

  • Low Energy Plasma Instrument Calibration (LEPIC) chamber
  • Optical calibration chamber
  • Twin materials screening (MSC) chambers
  • 20 Kelvin vacuum cryostat
  • Vacuum bakeout chamber

The ISO class 6 cleanroom is a vertical  flow particle filtration design. The LEPIC and Optical calibration chamber doors are positioned in such a manner that the cleanliness classification is ISO class 5. This ensures the cleanest possible environment when space flight hardware is prepared and installed into the facilities.

Other services

The ISO class 6 cleanroom has a total of 7 liquid nitrogen outlet points mainly for use on the various vacuum test chambers and Optical calibration chamber. The liquid nitrogen supply lines are continous Super Insulated Vacuum Lines (SIVL) which minimises liquid nitrogen boil off. The SIVL supply lines are fitted with stay fulls to ensure that only liquid nitrogen is fed from the outlets no matter how many systems are demanding LN2.

MSSL ISO Class 8 cleanroom A

The MSSL ISO class 8 cleanroom is newly commissioned facility that allows larger structures to be processed, assembled and tested at MSSL. The cleanroom is divided into two areas namely the low bay and two storey high bay area. A loading bay area adjoins the high bay area. The loading bay is separated from the main cleanroom via roller shutter doors which are six meters high.
