Frequently Asked Questions

Can students who are only at UCL for the autumn term register for MS&I modules?

No, all our modules have exams in the summer term so students must be here either for the full academic year or for the spring and summer terms.

How many modules can affiliate students take with MS&I?

If you are registered as an affiliate student in the Department of MS&I for a full academic year, you should take a minimum of 4 course units with us.  (most modules are 0.5 course units)

If you are registered as an affiliate student in the Department of MS&I for the spring/summer terms, you should take a minimum of 2 course units with us.

Students registered in other departments may take up to half their required course units with MS&I pending available places.

How many hours of teaching does each module have each week?

Most courses consist of weekly 2-hour lectures plus 1-hour seminars in which students are encouraged to participate in class discussions and other activities.

How are students assessed?

Assessment typically involves one or two essays or a group assignment and a written end-of-year examination; all students must be available to take examinations in April/May.

When and where will lectures take place?

The Department does not have its own teaching space so lectures take place all over the UCL campus. Students are advised to check the UCL online timetable regularly for timetabling and location details: http://www.ucl.ac.uk/timetable.
