Dr Helen Bedford
Email: Helen Bedford
Helen Bedford trained and practised as a nurse and a health visitor before joining ICH in 1986. The subject of her PhD, awarded in 2000, was the long term outcome of bacterial meningitis in children under one year.
As a senior lecturer in children’s health at UCL ICH she has two main roles: research and teaching.
Helen was involved in the MSc in Community Paediatrics, one of the first masters courses of its type, from its inception in the late 1980s. Over the years it has gradually changed from a one year full time course to the flexible modular course now on offer to better cater for the needs of students with improved learning opportunities.
Helen’s research interests focus on child public health
issues. She has a particular interest in the epidemiology of childhood
vaccination uptake and has conducted landmark studies on this topic. Other work
includes issues around the Healthy Child Programme, the universal public health
programme offered to all children in the UK.
