Molecular Psychiatry Laboratory
UCL Mental Health Sciences Unit
Introduction
The Molecular Psychiatry Laboratory (Lab. Director Professor Hugh Gurling) has been mapping the genes increasing susceptibility for bipolar disorder, schizophrenia, alcoholism and Alzheimer’s disease using family linkage and case/control linkage disequilibrium studies. The most important aspect of the research is to carry out direct genomic DNA sequencing of the genes that have been identified by mapping studies in order to identify the actual aetiological DNA base pair changes causing abnormalities in the structure or function of the proteins that these genes encode. With this information it will be possible to create new treatments or prevention strategies.
