Graduate Training Opportunities

UCL offers many and varied opportunities for PhD research in all aspects of mitochondrial biology, bioenergetics and metabolism. Research projects range across all themes, from the molecular biology of mitochondrial proteins, the cell biology of pathways to cell death, aspects of fundamental mitochondrial bioenergetics, roles of mitochondria in neurodegenerative, neuroinflammatory or neuromuscular diseases, or in cancer, to clinical aspects of mitochondrial involvement in sepsis, multiple organ systems failure or neurological disease. Allied areas include programmes in chemical biology, medical physics, nanotechnology or the CoMPLEX programme that represents a marriage of maths/physics and life sciences. Research of the CfMR is carried out throughout UCL's biomedical and life science departments, by researchers who are among the world leaders of their fields, using state of the art techniques to address basic and clinical questions that are central in the field.

Students interested in studying for a PhD with members of the consortium may approach members individually, as there are a variety of intradepartmental opportunities available for PhD funding. In addition, it may be appropriate to apply for any one of the programmes listed below that seems suitable for the skills and interests of the applicant.

Programmes include 4 year programmes in which the first year is spent in taught courses or in rotations through several different laboratories before deciding on their final PhD lab and project, and there are also several three year programmes, in which students will enter the host lab of their PhD directly.
