Italian Cinema of Migration
A screening and discussion of:
Io l’altro (English sub-titles)
(dir. Mohsen Melliti, 2007)
Abstract
Two men, an Italian named Giuseppe and a Moroccan exile named Yousef, work on a fishing boat together in Italian waters. They have done so for years – they bought the boat together – and are like brothers. But when an act of terror is committed by someone with exactly the same name as the Moroccan character, the relationship deteriorates. The post 9/11 notion of the Muslim suspect, begins to consume both the shortwave radio-waves in the area and the two men's friendship, bringing devastating results.
