Abstract |
This paper focuses on the changing definitions of community in multicultural Italy. Grounded in work by Bauman, Todorov, Brennan and Arendt, Parati develops a theoretical framework in which impermanent communities can be created. Literature and the affective reaction to it plays a large role in such transitory constructions that lead writers to play important roles as public intellectuals in contemporary Italian society.

By looking at a small number of sample texts linked to migration and mobility, this paper will ask questions about contemporary conceptualizations of Italian identity and its linguistic embodiments. Particular attention will be given to ways in which the multiple linguistic roots and allegiances of the authors find their way onto the page through phenomena of self-translation, and to the effects of such - implicit or explicit - multilingualism on readership and reception |
