Dr Richard Mole Identities and Culture in Europe - National, Regional and Individual Identities, September 2003 - August 2005, then to a post at the UCL School of Slavonic and Eastern European Studies

As a UCL Mellon Fellow was researching Identities and Culture in Europe with a particular focus on national, regional and individual identities in the modern European context, and based in the School of Slavonic and East European Studies. Richard was born in Scotland and educated in the UK, USSR and Austria.

  • 2000: British Association for Slavonic and East European Studies travel grant to conduct research in Latvia
  • 2000: TEMPUS grant to conduct research at the European University, St Petersburg
  • 1994: European University Institute PhD grant (declined)
  • 1988: British Council studentship to study at the University of Debrecen, Hungary

Research interests

  • The influence of national identity on foreign and security policy
  • The creation of social reality and its use in foreign and security policy
  • The impact of discourse on attitudes towards outgroups in ethnically divided societies
  • The Europeanisation of identities in EU candidate countries
  • The relationship between national and sexual identities
