Lora Koycheva Lora Koycheva is a sociocultural anthropologist. Originally from Sofia, she has been educated in the USA. She holds a Bachelor of Arts in Cultural Studies from Columbia College Chicago and a PhD in Anthropology from Northwestern University, Evanston, IL: Speculative Normalcy: Time, Agency, and Ambiguity in Changing Bulgaria. Lora's research projects often focus on urban dynamics, organization, legal-normative systems, and language and materiality, but her interests are much broader and aim to draw on the insights from the humanities and, the social and natural sciences. Lora’s interdisciplinary interests also led her to pursue a M.Sc. degree in Demography with the European Doctoral School of Demography at the Universitat Autonoma de Barcelona, sponsored by the Max Planck Institute for Demographic Research.

In her current research Lora is concentrating on two separate projects: “The Relevance of the Average” and “The Historic Demography of Sephardic Jews in the Ottoman Empire.” Both projects reconsider area studies through an interdisciplinary perspective and explore the uses and limits of numerical and natural languages in interdisciplinary area studies research. Please consult this website shortly for more information on these projects, or contact Dr. Koycheva directly.
