Biomedical Ultrasound Group

The Biomedical Ultrasound Group (BUG) provides a focus for research involving ultrasonics and acoustics within the Department of Medical Physics & Bioengineering. Ultrasound is the most commonly used modality for diagnostic imaging, but it is also used in clinical practice for guiding surgical procedures and as an ablative therapy, for example, for treating solid organ cancers. Ultrasound, on its own, and more recently in combination with optical sensing techniques, has a wide variety of applications in biomedical science, and provides a powerful technique for investigating tissue structure and function, as well as for monitoring and delivering novel therapies.

Modelling Ultrasound Propagation
- k-Wave: a Matlab Toolbox for time domain modelling of broadband, nonlinear acoustic propagation through absorbing heterogeneous media.
Ultrasound-Guided Therapy
- Registration of interventional ultrasound images to other imaging modalities, such as MR and CT
- Image-directed high-intensity ultrasound (HIFU) therapy planning and delivery
