Centre for Respiratory Research
The Centre for Respiratory Research at University College London Medical School comprises a team of leading scientists and physicians dedicated to new research aimed at improving our understanding of the pathogenesis of debilitating respiratory diseases, including asthma, lung cancer, acute lung injury, pulmonary infections, chronic obstructive pulmonary diseases and fibrotic lung disorders. We have major programmes ongoing in cell and molecular biology and have developed new approaches to modelling human diseases. We are also a major training centre for scientists and physicians in Europe and have laboratories with state-of-the-art equipment for tissue culture, molecular genetics, biochemistry, image analysis and transcriptional profiling using oligonucleotide gene chips. Translational clinical studies, centred at the Middlesex Hospital , the Royal Free Hospital and Great Ormond Street Children's Hospital, focus on finding better ways of monitoring and treating respiratory diseases. We are supported by grants totalling more than £ 9 million from the Wellcome Trust, the Medical Research Council, the British Lung Foundation, the Arthritis Research Campaign, Asthma UK and Cancer Research UK . We also form partnerships with colleagues in pharmaceutical companies aimed at developing new approaches to treat patients suffering with respiratory diseases.
