Research Description

The research programme of our group (http://www.ucl.ac.uk/medicine/amyloidosis/research/index.html), directed by Professor MB Pepys FRS, is highly collaborative and focused on development of effective therapies for treatment of amyloidosis and cardiovascular disease. My current contibutions (http://www.ucl.ac.uk/medicine/amyloidosis/staff/gt.html) include: Thermodynamic characterisation of complexes formed in vitro between novel compounds and (1) C reactive protein (CRP), (2) serum amyloid P component (SAP), or (3) transthyretin (TTR), and evaluation of their inhibitory effects; (4) Immunocytochemical evaluation of the expression of inflammatory cell markers in tissues of amyloidotic mice that received novel treatment regimes, and (5) Isolation of ex vivo amyloid fibrils and production of amyloid like fibrils in vitro, and their characterisation, for evaluation with respect to fibrillogenesis and/or fibril structure, and binding by SAP and/or anti fibril antibodies.
