Research Information
The INM has active research programs in both Clinical Research and Applied Science (Medical Physics and Radiochemistry).
The INM has an active clinical research programme covering
a range of clinical interests that includes oncology and radionuclide
therapy, cardiovascular systems, neurology and pulmonary medicine. The
programme involves both UCL and NHS staff and benefits from strong
collaboration with several clinical departments. See the clinical research programme page for details.
Professor Hutton leads a research group focussed on
Medical Physics applied to Nuclear Medicine and Molecular Imaging
Science. The research program focuses mainly on emission tomography
(both PET/CT and SPECT/CT) including issues affecting quantification,
tomographic reconstruction and system design. See the physics research programme page for details.
Radiochemistry Research Programme
The Institute has recently appointed a Senior Lecturer in Radiochemistry (Dr Eric Arstad) and new Radiochemsitry Labs will be operational towards the end of 2009. See the radiochemistry page for details.
The INM is also actively involved in two major UCL-wide research programmes: the Comprehensive Cancer Imaging Centre and the CBC Imaging theme.
Comprehensive Cancer Imaging Centre (UCL/KCL)
The INM is
part of the Comprehensive Cancer Imaging Centre (CCIC) for UCL/KCL, one of four
national centres funded by CRUK and EPSRC. The INM has projects in Radiochemistry development, preclinical imaging,
development of a novel SPECT system and Clinical validation of new tracers. See the CCIC site for more details.
CBC Imaging Theme
A combined
submission made by UCL Hospitals NHS Foundation Trust and UCL to the National
Institute for Health Research resulted in a successful bid to become a Comprehensive
Biomedical Research Centre - a funded initiative to facilitate delivery of the
highest quality translational research. The research programmes of over 250 PI’s have
been developed in the proposal into 16 themes based around the following areas
representing key research strengths - Cardiovascular Disease, Cancer, Imaging,
Neurological Disease, Infections Disease, Oral Health.
The Imaging theme [Imaging - Structural, Functional and Molecular] draws heavily upon the contributions of the Institute of Nuclear Medicine and the theme lead is Professor Peter Ell, former Director of the Institute of Nuclear Medicine - UCL.
